BARILLA PAVILION
The Barilla Pavilion proposes to reclaim the site for an agricultural landscape that remarries the relationship between nature and the constructed building. By localizing the pavilion within the farming landscape, the project reprioritizes locality and freshness of ingredients, as well as defines sustainability goals for both the built project and its culinary function and education. It is a distinctive public epicenter that houses culinary art experience, brand culture, experimentation, education, and an art collection in the midst of a horticultural landscape.
The design of the pavilion is inspired by the rich history of Barilla’s factory architecture. The nine meter wide sheds play with the definition of the early 20th century industrial factory. The sheds utilize historic vernacular, such as bearing walls, archways and roof trusses with gable roofs, in a modern language that integrates itself into both the landscape and cultural spaces. Ranging from 8 m to 16 m tall, pylons wrapped in expanded metal mesh let in natural light overhead to celebrate art and culture, as well as paying homage to the milling silos that are on the campus. Exterior spaces penetrate the building facade and centers; it can be used as farming grounds for classes and research, further integrating interior and exterior.
